SPEEDRIDING POLISH CUP 2012

Second unofficial speedriding Polish championships are over.
Despite a few weather problems, first with the rain then with the wind, the championships came to a happy end. Once again, the organizer made the competitors’ lives difficult by setting a tricky task called Speed Control Slalom. Each rider had 5 attempts to complete the course, but only 3 best counted. Competitors had to show courage and skill, riding their wings precisely between 7 gates scattered on a 1100m long slope of Laworta; average slope angle 20%.

The course started with giant slalom gates (flying not allowed) followed by a 42m high cliff, from which competitors flew towards the next gate but had to land before crossing the line. The next stage was a flying slalom between gates, but contact with the ground was also allowed. The final stage of Speed Control Slalom was a very difficult ride through a narrow jump followed by a 30m long virtual chasm, which had to be cleared in the air. Landing within the chasm zone meant 5 penalty seconds added to the time. No ground contact on the jump meant 10 penalty seconds. Missing a gate meant disqualification. Finish line had to be crossed with at least one ski touching the ground.

17 riders competed in Speedriding Polish Cup 2012. First place with the best time of 2:55,28 sec took Michał Szwedo, who also scooped the first prize – the latest speedriding harness
Sari Mont Blanc, founded by Centrumparalotniowe.pl. Second place went to Wacław Kuzło and the third was taken by Przemysław Szukalski, who was closely followed by Jerzy “Japończyk” Kraus only 0:00,48 sec behind. Last year’s winner Arkadiusz Sabat came sixth.

Once again many thanks and words of appreciation go to the Cup organizer Wacław Kuzło, precursor of speedriding in Poland, who, with great commitment, keeps promoting this magnificent sport, which provides extreme experiences to whomever has the courage to try it.

Speedriding is a combination of skiing and paragliding. It enables riding on all kind of slopes, even the most steep, and taking off to the air when needed, thanks to a specially constructed wing, similar to a paraglider. Average size of speedriding wings varies between 8 and 12 square meters. The right body position and the angle of the wing allow to generate unbelievable speed.
Speedriding wing is surprisingly easy to control while riding on mountain slopes.
Speedriding is considered to be one of the most dangerous sports in the world.

Following the accident he was able to call the emergency services on his mobile.
